The past few days have gone in remaining up late at night and praying hard, no, neither have I been burning the mid-night oil, nor have I turned spiritual but it’s the football world cup which has kept me up till late, while praying for my favourite team to win. You see, the football world cup comes only once in four years and even though one can skip any other match, missing a final is simply not plausible. Germany won the world cup and within the next four hours, I had a red hot German speed rocket at my doorstep, the CLA45 AMG, what better way to celebrate Germany’s victory by relishing in the force fed madness offered by the world’s most powerful 4-cylinder engine. Mercedes’ clever strategy has helped them kill two birds using one stone, with the CLA45, not only do they introduce Indians to the CLA but also to their most affordable AMG offering. Mercedes Benz AMG CLA 45 Exteriors

The CLA45AMG looks like a typical German tourist on Indian roads. It does not get well with the surroundings and always leaves its onlookers with some great level of curiosity. It is not an exaggeration to confirm that the CLA45AMG is the best looking sedan in the entire Benz portfolio.What makes it so explicitly beautiful? Thanks to AMG, this compact sedan has ‘Racing’ written all over its design. Look at it from any angle and you would find fins and skirts jetting out of the body. It is based on the same platform as the A-Class but the CLA45AMG look way different from the hatch with a unique profile. The grille gets the prominent logo with twin slats. With large air intake scoops and carved splitters, this one can gulp down gallons of air to cool that racing heart under the hood.

It is a compact sedan for sure and with those CLS inspired roof and window lines, one can’t stop praising about its aerodynamic design. This coupe looking sedan also ditches standard framed doors for frameless ones. It gets panoramic sunroof in a glossy black finish. Side skirts, five spoke alloys and red AMG brake callipers give a proper idea of its high performance DNA. To top it up, there is a tiny ‘TURBO AMG’ badge near the front wheel arch. The C-Pillar flows in the most beautiful way all the way to the rear boot lid.The slant angle of the rear windshield makes it look integrated with the rear profile. The boot lid gets a subtle boot lip spoiler. The most attractive feature about the CLA4AMG has to be its flowing tail lamps. In fact, I find them way more impressive than that on the S-Class. These flame accented lights flow around the rear boot lid. This one also gets new set of Quad square AMG pipes which can be further customised.

As for the car itself, the CLA is the sedan – or four-door coupé in Mercedes parlance – version of the A-class, and the family connection is plain to see. Viewed head on, you’d have to focus pretty hard to realise the headlights are a bit different from the hatchback. In profile, however, we’ll go along with Mercedes’ contradictory body-style definition, because although it has four frameless doors, the arced roofline does make it look like a coupé. It looks fabulous. Add to that the elegantly tapered boot with its subtle lid spoiler, and the CLA really does look like a shrunken CLS. Finally, this being the AMG version, there are a lot of ‘go-faster’ add-ons, like a meaty diffuser under the rear bumper, big 18-inch alloy wheels and large air intakes in the front bumper.

The dashboard will be familiar if you’ve ever been in an A-class, and that includes the beautiful rotary air vents, fantastic build and material quality, and the tablet-like screen for the COMAND system. There’s an Alcantara-trimmed AMG steering wheel that feels great in your hands, plenty of red stitching all over the cabin, and red seatbelts too. The gear selector, as with most AMGs, is a stubby lever on the centre console, rather than Mercedes’ usual steering-column stalk.The front seats are pure sportscar stuff – electrically adjustable and heated Recaros that are very snug and just a tad too firmly cushioned. They look great, though and really make you feel like you’re in a proper performance car. The rear seat is quite similar to that of an A-class, albeit with a fair bit more legroom, and headroom is just about adequate for a sedan this small.

The 2.0-litre inline-four cylinder turbocharged engine produces 355bhp and 450Nm of torque (45.9kgm) – this is why it gets the 45 AMG badge. Simply put, this is the most powerful four-cylinder engine in production today. The high-revving motor is ferocious with massive assistance from a twin-scroll turbo the size of a Bollywood celebrity’s ego that pushes air into the engine at an incredible pressure of 26 psi. It is capable of reaching 100kph in around four and a half seconds, producing deep throaty music that also appeals to the motorcyclist in me. In the Comfort / Economy mode the car is sedate and the DCT gearbox acts a little confused. It won’t downshift quickly under braking and as name suggests only suitable for commuting to your favourite motoring destination. Switch to Sport mode and we are talking business – it revs cleanly to 6,700rpm before quickly selecting the next gear. The CLA 45 AMG is deceptively quick, speeds beyond 150kph can be reached in no time and then getting back isn’t much difficult with fantastic brakes. There is noticeable turbo-lag, but once the needle crosses 3,500rpm getting to redline takes so little time, manual mode will catch you out the first few times – marking this as a true AMG motor. The performance is more like a supersports motorcycle with extremely nerve-wracking top-end delivery.

This also makes driving in Manual mode a little tricky, a delay of an instance in hitting the paddle shifter and you will be sitting on the limiter making a fool of yourself. Get it right, though, and you’re rewarded with distant gunfire as all the unburnt fuel from during the upshift ignites in the exhaust. A special mention here to the bloke who decided NOT to let the gearbox upshift when it hits the limiter – you, sir, understand the needs of an enthusiast.Unlike the 7G-Tronic gearbox used in rest of the line-up, this gets the DCT 7-speed sport transmission similar to the one used in the SLS AMG. I have always complained about the gearshifts in most Mercs, even the AMG versions – but this one is lot better and finally almost on par with VW’s DSG and ZF’s eight-speed transmissions.

Mercedes Benz AMG CLA 45 Verdict

The CLA 45 doesn’t feel quite like a traditional AMG, lacking the drama and excitement that the bigger cars deliver so well. However, it’s important to remember that this is still a relatively practical four-door luxury sedan, with good equipment and a decent sized boot as well. It’s not what you’d call slow either, with the turbo four packing some serious punch. And of course, it looks absolutely amazing, and will doubtless part crowds anywhere you take it. The CLA 45 AMG is likely to cost in the region of Rs 70 lakh (ex-showroom) when it goes on sale, and that does seem like a lot for what is not a very large car. However, there aren’t too many all-out performance cars in this price range, and the CLA 45 makes a good stepping stone to the AMG club.
